Unlock PDF

Remove password protection from a PDF — processed in your browser

Processed in your browser — 100% private

If you know the password to a protected PDF but want to stop typing it every time you open the file — or need to merge, split or edit it with another tool that chokes on encryption — our unlock tool removes the password in your browser. You enter the password, the PDF is decrypted locally, and you download an unencrypted copy. Your password and your file never leave your device.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Drop the password-protected PDF into the window.
  2. Enter the current password.
  3. Click "Unlock PDF" and download the unencrypted file.

Supported formats

Input: standard-encrypted PDFs (AES-128, AES-256). Output: unencrypted PDF with identical content.

Unlock PDF — Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?
No. Our tool only removes a known password — it can't bypass or recover an unknown one. Password recovery from PDFs requires brute-force tools we don't provide.
What if the PDF is already unencrypted?
You'll see a message telling you the PDF isn't password-protected — no need to unlock it.
Is the password sent anywhere?
No. Decryption happens entirely in your browser using @cantoo/pdf-lib. The password is used only to derive the decryption key locally.
Is it legal to remove the password?
Yes, provided you have the right to access the document. Unlocking a PDF you legitimately own or received is fine. Bypassing password protection on someone else's document without permission is not.
